Helen Kahn opened Cup and Top Cafe on February 6, 2006.
Having two young children, Helen recognized that the Pioneer Valley lacked a restaurant that was completely welcoming to families with young children and provided healthy food choices. At the time we opened, Florence had no cafes that served gourmet coffees, teas, breakfast and lunch. So we created a cafe with the mission of serving nutritious and delicious food in a family friendly atmosphere. Another goal was to promote and support local: local musicians, authors, illustrators and artists as well as local farms and other food and beverage providers.
Family Friendly: In the back of the cafe you will find a creative playspace and book reading area designed for kids 0-7 years old. This area periodically transforms into a performance space for musicians, storytellers and authors. Our menu is designed with families in mind. We have a whole section dedicated to healthy and delicious food choices for kids – and, yes, adults can order from this part of the menu, too!
But you don’t have to have, or even like kids to enjoy the cafe! The front of the cafe provides a comfortable space to eat, drink, meet with friends, hop online or read a book while gazing out over Florence’s main street through our floor-to-ceiling windows.
Food Allergy Sensitivity: We are aware that there are a multitude of food allergies and we do our best to provide something for everyone. We are a PEANUT FREE environment. We do not use peanuts or peanut oils in any of our foods. Our “squirrel nutkin” sandwich is made with cashew butter and jam, and our “monkey in the middle” sandwich is made with cashew butter, honey, and banana. We also have many GLUTEN-FREE options, from frittatas to soups to muffins to sandwiches made on gluten-free rolls. And we provide VEGETARIAN and VEGAN choices daily. Our staff is always happy to share the list of ingredients with curious customers.
The back of our menu lists our local suppliers. They include: Dean’s Beans Organic/Fair Trade Coffee (Orange), TeaGuys Tea (Whately), Mapleline Farm Milk (Hadley), Bread Euphoria (Haydenville), Tandem Bagels (Easthampton), Dufresne’s Sugar House Maple Syrup (Williamsburg), Appalachian Naturals Dressings (Goshen), Diemand Farm chicken (Wendell) and Bashista Orchards apples and cider (Southampton). We also buy and serve seasonal produce from local farms.
The Pioneer Valley is home to a wealth of talented people. To showcase this talent, the cafe has shelves of books for sale, dedicated solely to local writers, poets and illustrators. We sell CDs of local musicians and storytellers. Cards by a number of local artists are available for purchase. The cafe walls serve as a gallery space for shows by local artists that rotate every two months. Local musicians, authors and storytellers perform regularly at the cafe.
